Alexander Girard donated 100,000 objects from his and his wife Susan’s folk art collection to the Museum of International Folk Art, which became the museum’s permanent exhibition, "Multiple Visions: A Common Bond." When he put the collection together Alexander Girard thought that it was a collection of toys so therefore he wanted us to be a museum of toys and it took him quite a while to actually accede to the idea that it would be instead a folk art collection and there is tremendous overlap but not entirely really Toy store is Alexander Girard's set with a beautiful representation of shoppers in a toy store and the shelves are packed with all sorts of miniatures.
It is a Latin American toy shop and there are these beautiful little cases and because he loved toys so much I always think of it as his ideal toy shop.
What's also really beautiful is he gives us a view into the shop that is across the street and he paid attention to the signs.
One of them is backwards because we're within the store looking out.
Alexander Girard paid attention to everything.
That was his fastidious nature.
