As General Sherman’s army approached Atlanta, it was met by defenses so impressive that Sherman decided against an all-out attack. Instead he bombarded the city with cannonballs. One of those struck a lamppost and exploded at the feet of a local barber. He did not survive, but the lamppost exists today and commemorates the death of the ironically named barber.
