In 1895 Atlanta hosted the Cotton States and International Exposition. It was held on the location that would eventually become Piedmont Park and attracted over 800,000 people. Guests included Buffalo Bill, John Phillips Sousa and President Grover Cleveland. But a memorable event was when African American educator Booker T. Washington gave a speech that put him in the national spotlight.
