AND IT'S GOT THE DRAWERS READY TO GO.

AND IT'S THE SIMPLEST THING ON EARTH.
WELL, WE'RE GONNA SEE HOW TO DO IT.

IF YOU SEE THAT LITTLE END OF THE TENON COMING IN, YOU SEE HOW IT'S MIRED OFF RIGHT THERE TO MATCH THE MITER RIGHT HERE.

A MORTISING CHISEL THAT WE WOULD THEN CHOP WITH A MALLET.

IT IS A 3/8" MORTISING CHISEL, BUT I'M GONNA ACTUALLY USE WHAT THE SHAKERS HAVE PROBABLY USED.
IN FACT, THEY INVENTED, BUILT THEIR OWN MORTISING MACHINES.
THEY WERE VERY MUCH INTO THE MOST MODERN TECHNOLOGY.
AND THAT ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW, WAS, UH... YOU KNOW, LABOR-SAVING STUFF.
THEY WERE VERY INDUSTRIOUS, BUSINESSES MAKING... NOT JUST FOR THEMSELVES BUT FOR EACH OTHER.
AND THEY USED MACHINES.
NOW, THIS IS A POST-WAR-- THAT'S POST AMERICAN CIVIL WAR-- MORTISING MACHINE, A FOOT-OPERATED BARNES FOOT MORTISER.
AND I'M JUST GONNA WALK ALONG, TAKING A LITTLE CUT OUT AS I GO ALONG HERE.
I'M GONNA START AT THE OTHER END AND COME BACK NOW.

SO TALK ABOUT THE MODERN THINGS USED BY THE SHAKERS.
THEY EVEN CLAIM-- ONE OF THOSE SHAKERS TAKES CREDIT FOR INVENTING THE CIRCULAR SAW.
SAID SHE WAS WORKING AT A LOOM, AND SHE LOOKED AT SOME BOYS OUTSIDE SAWING WOOD, AND...SHE LOOKED AT THE RATCHET ON HER LOOM, SHE LOOKED AT THE BOYS SAWING, AND SHE LOOKED AT THE RATCHET ON HER LOOM, AND SHE LOOKED AT THE SAWING, AND SHE LOOKED AT THE RATCHET, AND SAID, "AHA!
EUREKA," OR WHATEVER THAT IS IN SHAKER, AND SHE INVENTED THE CIRCULAR SAW.
BUT INDEED THEY'D BEEN AROUND A LITTLE WHILE, I THINK, BUT STILL, THEY'RE SHAKERS, AND THEY'RE OUR PEOPLE.
SO WE'LL BELIEVE THAT.

AND I SAID "BOYS," YOU KNOW.
WHAT THE HECK?
HOW DID YOU GET YOUNG PEOPLE THERE IF THIS WAS A CELIBATE SECT?

AND WOMEN IN THE SHAKER COMMUNITY WERE TREATED EXACTLY EQUAL.
UH, THERE WAS A LITTLE SEPARATION BETWEEN THE GENDERS, BECAUSE YOU HAD TO BE PURE, BUT INDEED MAYBE THAT'S WHAT HELPED.
THEY WERE...UH...TREATED, AND IN FACT, EVERYTHING RUN BY EQUAL NUMBERS OF MEN AND WOMEN IN THE SHAKER COMMUNITIES.
AND SO THIS IS VERY ATTRACTIVE TO WOMEN, BUT AS...WOMEN'S SITUATION BECAME IMPROVED, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, IN THE 19th CENTURY...

ONE ADVANTAGE WITH THIS MORTISING MACHINE, IF YOU'VE WORKED AROUND FOLKS WITH A MALLET AND CHISEL, THIS IS QUIET.
THIS IS VIRTUALLY SILENT COMPARED TO MORTISING WITH A MALLET AND CHISEL.
BUT THERE'S KIND OF A PARADOX IN THAT.
THINK OF THE QUAKERS AND THEIR... OH, GOSH.
THEY'RE ENJOYING SILENCE AND PERFECTION AND ALL THAT STUFF.
WELL, THEY GOT THEIR NAME-- THEY WERE CALLED THE BELIEVERS.
THEY GOT THEIR NAME FROM FOLKS WATCHING THEM AND THEIR ECSTATIC, THEIR ECSTATIC DANCES AND SINGING AND YAHOOING AND SHAKING DANCES TO SHAKE OUT THE DEVIL, AND THAT'S HOW THEY GOT THE NAME SHAKERS.

SO I'VE RESET THE GAUGE SO THAT WE COULD HAVE IT NOT FLUSH, BUT BACK LIKE THAT.

I'VE TRUED IT UP VERY CAREFULLY TO MAKE SURE IT'S VERY SQUARE, BOTH ENDS ARE PARALLEL AND DEAD-ON.
