Whether you call it slime, gak or oobleck, you've got to try this fun and easy science experiment! Mix cornstarch and water, add food coloring and watch it dance!

[laughter] Some people call it slime.
Some people call it Gak.
Scientists refer to it as a non-Newtonian fluid.
But the name Oobleck comes from Dr. Seuss's book, "Bartholomew and the Oobleck".
Oobleck is a strange, slimy substance that has the properties of both a solid and a liquid.
If you slowly put your hand through it, it'll slide through your fingers like a liquid.
If you punch it or squeeze it hard, it'll act like a solid.
So today I'm going to teach you how to recreate that cool slimy substance and then make it dance.
Here's what you'll need-- a speaker or sub woofer, 2 cups of cornstarch, 1 cup of water, a bowl, a spoon, some food coloring, some plastic wrap, and an MP3 of an audio test tone.
[audio test tone playing] They're pretty easy to find online.
Just search for 40, 50, or 60 hertz tones.
Now, let's make our Oobleck.
You're going to pour your cornstarch into a bowl.
Be careful.
Cornstarch easily spills.
Now you're going to add in your water.
Now mix.
[music playing] After you mix your cornstarch and water, it should look like this.
Now, time to play with it.
Like I said, if you punch it-- ow-- it will act like a solid.
Ow.
If you put some on your hand, it'll slide through your fingers, like a liquid.
Cool, right?
The important part to do at this point is to play with it, of course.
Oop!
Punch, punch.
Squeeze!
Squeeze!
Squeeze!
Liquid.
To make your Oobleck dance, put some Saran wrap on top of the speakers to protect them.
Then you're going to put blobs of Oobleck on top of it and play the MP3 test tone until it dances.
[audio test tone playing] What makes it dance is the vibrations.
[music playing] Now let's add some food coloring and see what happens.
All right, Oobleck dance off!
