NOW BEFORE I DO THIS, I'VE GOT TO LIGHT MY TORCH, BECAUSE I'M GONNA SOLDER THIS, AND I WANT TO SHOW YOU THE TORCH HERE, BECAUSE IT'S GOT TO WARM UP, AND YOU'LL HEAR IT HISSING FOR A SECOND WHILE WE DRILL.
THIS IS CALLED A MINERS LAMP ALCOHOL TORCH.
IT'S REALLY NEAT.
IT'S GOT TWO CHAMBERS HERE WITH ALCOHOL IN IT, AND IT'S CALLED A MINERS LAMP TORCH BECAUSE THIS IS AN OLD MINERS LAMP.
THIS IS THE KEROSENE STYLE THAT WOULD HAVE A WICK IN IT AND YOU KNOW, YOU WOULD JUST USE IT TO SEE YOUR WAY IN THE MINES.
WELL, LET ME LIGHT THIS, AND YOU'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
THE ALCOHOL ON THE WICK WILL VAPORIZE ALCOHOL IN THE GENERATOR, AND THAT--THERE WE GO.
NOW, IT'S A CLEAR, CLEAR FLAME.
SO IF YOU LOOK AT THIS THING, IT'S JUST DEAD-CLEAR.
THERE'S HARDLY ANYTHING THAT YOU CAN SEE RIGHT THERE.
A LITTLE BIT OF YELLOW.
BUT AS THAT FLAME HEATS THE ALCOHOL THAT'S WICKED UP INTO THE GENERATOR, IT'LL SHOOT OUT OF A LITTLE JET RIGHT THERE, AND YOU'LL HEAR IT HISSING IN JUST A SECOND.
BUT I WANT TO GIVE IT A CHANCE TO WARM UP.
ALL RIGHT?
ALL RIGHT.
SO LET'S LET THAT GO FOR A SECOND.
I'LL TRY AND REMEMBER THAT I HAVE THAT ON.
AND NOW WE'LL DRILL.
I'VE GOT THE LITTLE DRILL PRESS, AND IT'S CAUGHT IN THE... YEAH.
THERE WE ARE.
SLOWLY FEEDING THIS DOWN.
A LITTLE HAND-OPERATED DRILL PRESS.
IT'S A BEAUTY HERE.
AND RIGHT THROUGH THE COPPER.
SO I'VE DRILLED THIS BIGGER THAN THE THREAD OF THE HOLE THAT I WANT TO DO.
I CAN HEAR THE TORCH IS UP.
GOOD.
SO NOW I'VE GOT TO PREPARE THE MATERIAL.
I'VE GOT A BRASS NUT THAT NEEDS A LITTLE BIT OF SANDING, AND...
THE TORCH.
I HEAR THE TORCH GOING OUT, BUT THE NEAT THING IS, WITH THAT...
THE WICK THING THAT'S LIKE AN ALCOHOL LAMP, KEEPS IT GOING.
NOW, I'VE POLISHED THAT VERY NICELY.
AND I'M GONNA POLISH THIS RIGHT HERE, JUST TAKING ANY OXIDE OFF IT.
SO WE'RE JUST PREPARING IT FOR SOLDERING.
THERE WE GO.
OK. GOOD.
SO NOW THAT'S BRIGHT THERE.
THAT'S REALLY BRIGHT AND NICE.
AND SO THERE'S NO OXIDE ON THERE.
I'VE GOT NO OXIDE ON THIS.
I'M GOING TO PUT A LITTLE BIT OF FLUX ON HERE.
NOW, THIS IS POISONOUS STUFF, AND I'M WORKING WITH ALCOHOL.
SO IF YOU ARE OF THE YOUNG-PERSON PERSUASION, YOU MUST HAVE AN APPROVED ADULT WITH YOU, SHOWING YOU HOW TO DO THIS KIND OF WORK.
DO NOT DO THIS OF YOUR OWN ACCORD, PLEASE.
THERE WE GO.
SO THAT'S ON THERE.
BUT IT'S A COOL THING TO LEARN.
THERE WE ARE.

SO NOW, A LITTLE BIT OF FLUX ON THERE.
AND I'M GONNA PUT THIS BACK A LITTLE FURTHER HERE.
AND THAT END OF THE SCREW THAT STICKS OUT WILL KEEP IT ALIGNED IN THE HOLE.
AND I'M USING A STEEL SCREW NOW, NOT THE BRASS ONE THAT I'LL USE EVENTUALLY, BECAUSE THE BRASS MIGHT TAKE UP THE SOLDER, AND THAT WOULD NOT BE GOOD.
SO HERE WE GO.
I'M READY WITH THE TORCH.
AND I'VE GOT MY SOLDER.
WE'LL SEE HOW IT GOES HERE.
ALCOHOL DOES NOT HAVE A LOT OF MOXIE TO IT.
BUT I SHOULDN'T SAY THAT.
I'M COUNTING ON IT RIGHT NOW.

AND THE FLUX IS GONNA PROTECT THE BRASS AND THE COPPER FROM OXIDIZING.

WE'LL PUT THE CAP BACK ON IT.
AND IT DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB.
NOW, I'VE GOT TO LET IT COOL A LITTLE BIT BEFORE I PICK IT UP, AND WE'LL HOPE THAT THAT SCREW HAS NOT BEEN SOLDERED INTO PLACE.
BUT I DON'T THINK IT HAS BECAUSE AGAIN, IT WAS STEEL, AND THE REST OF IT WAS BRASS AND SUCH.
SO HERE'S THE SCREW I'M GOING TO USE.
THIS IS THE LITTLE SET SCREW.
THIS IS ACTUALLY A LAMP STANDARD SCREW HERE.
YOU EVER SEE THESE?
YOU'LL FIND THESE IN THE SPECIALTY HARDWARE SECTIONS OF A HARDWARE STORE.
YOU WANT THE THING THAT SCREWS THE LAMP, UM...
I GUESS IT'S FOR THE HARP ON A LAMP.
ANYWAY, THIS IS USED FOR ELECTRICAL LIGHTING IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THAT.
WELL, I'VE TAKEN ONE OF THOSE AND JUST SAWN IT OFF SO IT'S THE APPROPRIATE LENGTH, AND IT'S THIS NICE LITTLE KNURLED SCREW THERE.
AND I WAS THINKING, "WELL, THE BRASS WILL STICK TO THE SOLDER," BUT WHAT I FOUND OUT IS I THINK THIS IS JUST BRASS-PLATED.
BUT STILL IT WOULD STICK, SO I WANT TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT THAT.
AND I'LL SHOW YOU, THESE...
HERE'S THOSE TORCHES THERE, THOSE ALCOHOL TORCHES.
VERY NICE.
THIS IS ONE.
THIS IS IN THE STANDARD BLOWTORCH SIZE, AND THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE SELF-GENERATING.

I HAVE NOT HAD AS MUCH LUCK WITH THESE AS I HAVE WITH THESE OTHER ONES THAT HAVE THE WICK HERE AS YOU SAW BEFORE THAT HEATS THE GENERATOR AND LETS THAT LITTLE JET OF ALCOHOL FLAME COME OUT.
SO JUST LIKE A BLOWPIPE YOU'D USE IN SCIENCE CLASS.

THIS IS ONE I INHERITED IN A TOOLBOX, AND IT HAS AGAIN THAT FINAL STEP WE NEED TO DO, IS TO PUT A LITTLE SCREW THROUGH THE BACKSIDE.
YOU SEE HOW THERE'S A LITTLE SCREW RIGHT THERE?

THAT LITTLE SLOTTED SCREW.
THIS ONE, AGAIN IT'S THE COPPER... OR BRASS SECTION THERE WITH THE NUT SOLDERED ON, AND HERE THEY JUST USED A REGULAR OVAL-HEAD SCREW RIGHT THERE.
BUT IT HAS PLENTY OF GRIP RIGHT THERE.
AND THAT LITTLE SCREW THERE KEEPS IT ATTACHED TO THE ENDS SO THAT THIS CAN SLIDE AND DO ANY LENGTH YOU WANT.
SO THAT'S MY FINAL LITTLE BIT.
I'LL GET AN EGGBEATER DRILL AND TAKE MY TWO RODS HERE, ALL RIGHT, AND I WILL PUT THAT SCREW THROUGH THE BACKSIDE.
MAKE SURE I GO THROUGH THE RIGHT SIDE THERE.
SO A GOOD THING TO DO, A GOOD RAINY-DAY PROJECT, A NICE THING TO MAKE THAT WILL KEEP YOUR DOVETAILED CHESTS NICE AND SQUARE.

AND SQUEEZY BLOCKS TO MAKE SURE YOU DON'T CRUSH YOUR PINS WHEN YOU PUT IT ALL TOGETHER.

NOW, THE FINAL THING I GUESS YOU REALLY NEED IS, OF COURSE, A PROPER DOVETAIL HATCHET TO MAKE SURE YOUR DOVETAILS ARE AS GOOD AS THEY CAN BE.
