WE'VE USED THEM TOO INTENSIVELY FOR TOO LONG, AND THEY'VE LOST A LOT OF THE CARBON THAT WAS ORIGINALLY IN THE SOIL.
THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO TAKE OUT ALL YOUR AGGRESSION.
WHAT WE'RE DOING IS MEASURING THE BREATHING OF THE SOIL.
THE MICROBES EXHALE ALL OF THOSE GASES WE MEASURE THE RATE AT WHICH IT'S COMING OUT.
THE WARMER AND WETTER AND JUICIER IT IS IN THERE THE MORE GASES THAT COME OUT AND SO THAT'S WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO CAPTURE OVER THE COURSE OF THESE THREE DAYS THAT WE'VE BEEN MEASURING.
THAT CARBON WHICH USED TO BE IN THE SOIL IS NOW IN THE ATMOSPHERE.
THE IDEA IS TO REVERSE THE PROCESS.
TAKE CO2 OUT OF THE ATMOSPHERE AND PUT IT BACK IN THE SOIL WHERE IT USED TO BE, DECREASING THE AMOUNT IN THE ATMOSPHERE, SLOWING CLIMATE CHANGE, WHILE BUILDING THIS CARBON-RICH SOIL POOL.
WE WENT THROUGH AND SAMPLED 35 FIELDS, AND WHAT WE FOUND WAS A REALLY BIG SURPRISE.
WE SAW IN SOME CASES TWO OR THREE TIMES MORE SOIL CARBON IN SOME SITES THAN OTHER SITES.
WE WERE FINDING THAT THE DAIRIES TENDED TO HAVE MORE CARBON IN THEIR SOILS THAN THE BEEF CATTLE OPERATIONS, AND PART OF THAT WAS BECAUSE THE DAIRIES PRODUCED A LOT OF MANURE AND THEY WERE SPRAYING IT ON THEIR FIELDS, AND BY SPRAYING IT ON THE FIELDS THEY WERE BUILDING MORE SOIL CARBON.
MANURE ALSO PRODUCES NITROUS-OXIDE, THIS VERY, VERY POTENT GREENHOUSE GAS, AND SO WE'VE STARTED LOOKING AT THE POTENTIAL TO COMPOST THAT MATERIAL.
WE ADDED THE COMPOST ONCE IN 2008.
FOR FOUR YEARS AFTER THAT, WE GOT ANYWHERE FROM 25% TO 50% MORE PLANT GROWTH.
THE RANCHERS WERE ECSTATIC.
Wick: WHAT WE DID WAS APPLY 1/2 INCH OF COMPOST, WHICH IS A VERY THIN LAYER, BUT WE'RE NOT TILLING IT IN, WE'RE SIMPLY DUSTING THE SURFACE OF A RANGE-LAND SOIL SYSTEM, AND WE'RE DOING IT THIN ENOUGH THAT WE DON'T BURY THE PLANTS, AND ALL WE'RE PROVIDING IS THIS WONDERFUL CARBON-NITROGEN COMPLEX THAT THE MICROORGANISM POPULATION, WHEN THERE IS RAIN AND WATER, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF, AND IT WORKED.
