NOW, I MADE ONE THAT WE SAW ON AN OLD VICTORIAN PATTERN, BUT SHE SAID, "GOSH, THERE'S A PROBLEM.
I CAN ONLY--I CAN'T FIT...
BUT..." HEH HEH HEH!
"PLANTS OF A CERTAIN HEIGHT ON THE SHELVES.
"I NEED SOMETHING WHERE I CAN DO MORE TALL PLANTS, WHERE THEY GO UP."
I SAID, "NO PROBLEM, DEAR HEATHER," BECAUSE LOOK.
ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS UNDO THIS LITTLE WING NUT HERE AND PULL BACK, AND GUESS WHAT?
THE WHOLE THING RACKS OVER.
IT IS A PARALLELOGRAM PLANT STAND.
WE'RE GONNA SEE HOW TO MAKE IT.
IT'S ALL OUT OF ANGLE IRON AND ONE-INCH BAR STOCK-- OUT OF METAL.
SO WE'RE GONNA DO A LOT OF METALWORK.
NOW WE HAVE A WONDERFUL STAND WHERE WE CAN PUT HEATHER'S FLOWERS ALL OUT ON DISPLAY THERE.
IT'S A WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL THING THERE.
I DON'T WANT TO OVERTOP IT.
LET'S LOOK AT HOW IT WORKS HERE.
IT'S GOT THIS REALLY AWFUL VICTORIAN FRAME HERE SUPPORTING THE MAIN PART, WHICH IS THIS SET OF 5 SHELVES-- 3 FEET LONG, A FOOT DEEP-- AND EACH OF THESE CEDAR SHELVES IS SUPPORTED ON A BAR LIKE THIS.
I HAVE TAKEN A PIECE OF ONE-INCH ANGLE IRON AND BENT DOWN A TAB.
WE'RE GONNA DO THAT-- NOW, THIS IS THE ONE THAT GOES ON THE OTHER SIDE.
THERE'S RIGHT AND LEFT ONES, BUT EACH OF THESE SHELVES HAS ON THE END ONE OF THESE BARS LIKE THIS, HOLES DRILLED THROUGH IT, TO GO INTO THE UPRIGHT BARS.
AND THEN THERE'S SOME OTHER HOLES YOU CAN'T SEE THAT ARE DRILLED THROUGH TO HOLD THE SHELVES TO THIS.
SO WE GOT THESE BARS, AND THEN THESE UPRIGHTS HERE-- THEY ARE LOOSELY RIVETED.
WE'LL SEE HOW TO DO THAT RIVETING.
I'M GONNA UNDO THIS BOLT.
NOW, THIS GOES TO A SLIDER-- THERE'S ONE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE AS WELL-- AND THIS BOLT GOES ALL THE WAY THROUGH A LITTLE GROOVE PLOWED BETWEEN THESE TWO BOARDS, AND THAT ALLOWS THE SHELF TO MOVE IN A RACK BACK AND FORTH IN A PARALLELOGRAM.
IF I DO TOO MUCH, I'LL KNOCK ALL THE PLANTS OFF.
THIS IS WONDERFUL.
AS YOUR PLANTS GROW, YOU CAN KEEP THESE OUT IN THE SUN.
NOW, IT'S HAD A VICTORIAN DESIGN.
THIS IS VERY INDUSTRIAL DESIGN.
IT'S ALWAYS TOUGH WHEN YOU HAVE SOMETHING THAT WAS MADE ORIGINALLY BY MACHINE AND YOU DECIDE YOU'RE GONNA DO IT BY HAND BECAUSE THE METHODS ARE REALLY DIFFERENT.
BUT WE'LL SEE.

LET'S GO AHEAD AND START MAKING THESE ANGLE BRACKETS NOW.
AGAIN, YOU SEE ONE-INCH ANGLE IRON AND A TAB BENT DOWN ON THE END OF THE ANGLE IRON.
ALL RIGHT.
SO WE HAVE TO MAKE THESE RIGHT- AND LEFT-HAND PAIRS FOR EACH OF OUR 5 SHELVES.
AND WE HAVE, OF COURSE, A SOURCE FOR ANGLE IRON.
GO TO THE METAL YARD, BUY ANGLE IRON IN JUST ABOUT ANY SIZE-- 1/8" THICK WAS WHAT I HAD, AND ONE INCH ON EACH SIDE.
AND I'VE GOT A PIECE SAWN OFF RIGHT HERE.
CUT OFF A PIECE 11 3/4" LONG.
YOU WANT TO HAVE THEM A LITTLE BIT LESS THAN THE SPACES BETWEEN THE BOLTS HERE, AND I'VE GOT TO MAKE THAT TAB RIGHT NOW.
THAT'S GONNA BE A LITTLE ONE-INCH TAB THAT HANGS DOWN.
WE'LL USE OUR LITTLE ENGINEER'S...SQUARE THERE.
ALL RIGHT, AND MARK THAT WITH THE SCRIBE SO WE KNOW WHERE TO CUT.
NOW, FROM THIS POINT ON, NOW, I AM GOING TO CHANGE THE WAY I WORK.
I AM GOING TO PUT ON MY PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR, BECAUSE THE OTHER DAY I DIDN'T.

SO WEAR PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR, PARTICULARLY WHEN YOU'RE WORKING WITH THIS SHARP STEEL, BECAUSE YOU CAN LOSE YOUR VISION.

SO WE TAKE OUR COLD-ROLLED, THIS VERY STIFF STUFF, COLD-ROLLED, AND LAY OUT--YOU'RE GONNA HAVE THAT FIRST HOLE DOWN AT THE BOTTOM.
SO WE LAY OUT THE HOLE AT ONE END.
WE BORE THE HOLE AT THE OTHER END.
THEN FIND THE CENTER.
IN THIS CASE, WOULD BE 4 FEET, SO IT'S GONNA BE 24.

AND TO SET THAT ON THE ANVIL, I NEED THE SQUARE SIDE OF THE ANVIL TOWARDS ME.

BUT IF YOU WERE TO INSTEAD OF HAVE THESE PIVOT PINS, JUST RIVETS RIGHT HERE LIKE WE JUST DID, AND HAVE THEM GO INTO THE ACTUAL UPRIGHT POSTS, YOU COULD HAVE THIS THING RACK ALL THE WAY BACK INTO A TABLE-- A RATHER TIPSY TABLE, BUT IT WOULD STILL BE A TABLE.
ALL RIGHT.
SO THERE WE ARE.
LET'S LOOK AT A LITTLE BIT OF THE TURNING HERE.
THIS SIDE IS ABOUT AS FUNKY AS YOU CAN GET.
I MEAN, IT LOOKS LIKE THESE ARE BASEBALL BATS.
THEY'RE REALLY, REALLY UGLY TURNINGS ON THESE ENDS HERE.
AND THEY HAVE THE TYPICAL VICTORIAN BUSINESS HERE OF THESE BEADS AND SPINDLES.
SO 1/4" SPINDLES, ONE-INCH BEAD THERE.
AND THEN, ACTUALLY, THESE BEADS RIGHT HERE, THESE RINGS TURNINGS.
I WANT TO SEE HOW TO DO THOSE RIGHT QUICK BECAUSE THEY ARE REALLY TYPICAL OF OUR VICTORIAN FURN-- AND THERE'S SOME TRICKS TO IT.
YOU CAN DO IT WITH JUST A SKEW CHISEL.
SO THE ONLY OTHER FLAT PIECE OF STEEL WE NEED TO USE ON THE LATHE-- NOT ONLY TO MAKE THIS THING, BUT TO WORK IT-- IS THE--SORRY.
THE SKEW CHISEL.
THAT'S THIS CHISEL THAT IS A DIAGONAL TO THE END OF THE LATHE.
SEE HOW THAT'S A DIAGONAL RIGHT THERE?
KNIFE EDGED.
WE LAY OUT THE BEADS, AS I HAVE DONE RIGHT HERE ON THIS PIECE, BY MAKING SURE WE HAVE THE DIAMETER AND THE LENGTH EQUAL.
SO MAKE THAT CYLINDER, AND THEN ACTUALLY TURN YOUR BEAD FIRST.
THE PROBLEM IS THE FRAGILITY OF THIS.
SO HERE WE'VE GOT IT.
I FOUND THE CENTER.
WITH THE HEEL OF THE...
SKEW...
TURN OVER...
THE ROUNDOSITY.
ALL RIGHT.
DO THAT EQUALLY ON BOTH SIDES... AND WE HAVE OUR-- WE HAVE OUR BEAD.
NOW, WHAT WE DON'T HAVE, HOWEVER, IS THIS SHAFT THIN ENOUGH HERE.
SO, SEE, I'VE GOT THE BEAD, STARTING TO DO BOTH SIDES, BUT THE SHAFT IS GETTING REAL, REAL THIN, AND TO SUPPORT IT, WE HAVE TO DO THIS.
HOLD YOUR HAND ON THE BACK SIDE.
NOW, I'M USING A TREADLE LATHE.
IF YOU HAVE A POWER LATHE, YOU BE CAREFUL AND MAKE YOUR JUDGMENT AS TO WHETHER YOU CAN DO THIS, BUT YOU HAVE TO HOLD IT AND SLIDE THE...SKEW ALONG.
SEE WHAT I MEAN?
BECAUSE THE PRESSURE OF THE CUTTING ON THIS THIN STUFF WILL CAUSE IT TO DISTORT.
BUT BY HOLDING IT ON THE BACK SIDE... ALL RIGHT?
CUT IN A LITTLE BIT, AND THEN SLIDE ON DOWN, ALWAYS CUTTING WITH THIS LOWER PART OF THE SKEW.
AND WORK IT ON DOWN.
ALL RIGHT, ENOUGH OF THAT.
SO THAT'S HOW WE DO THE BALL AND SPINDLES AND GET THEM THIN, BY SUPPORTING THEM.
I'M GONNA DO NOW THOSE-- THOSE RINGS.
WHAT ARE THEY CALLED?
MY BRAIN JUST FRIES ON THEM, BUT ANYWAY, THE RINGS HERE.
AND I'LL SET THEM IN THE LATHE.
AND THEY'RE, AGAIN, ALL DONE WITH THE SKEW CHISEL.
THIS IS SOMETHING WHEN WE'RE WORKING WITH FLAT IRON.
NOW, I HAVE NO IDEA HOW OLD THIS DESIGN IS, BUT I TELL YOU, IT HAD CROSSHEAD SCREWS IN IT HOLDING SOME CRISSCROSS WIRE SUPPORTS ON THE BACK, AND THEY WERE ORIGINAL.
SO IT GOES ONLY AS FAR BACK AS THE BEGINNING OF CROSSHEAD SCREWS.
LET'S LOOK AT DOING THOSE RINGS.
I'VE GOT SOME STARTED RIGHT HERE AS KIND OF A GOOD WAY TO PRACTICE.
WE'LL START WITH THE POINT OF THE SKEW.
HERE ARE THE RINGS.
THE BEADS GO IN WITH THE POINT, COME IN FROM BOTH SIDES WITH THE POINT.
POINT IS DOWN.
ALL RIGHT.
NOW WE'VE DELINEATED IT, BUT IT'S STILL SQUARE.
SO NOW, WITH THE LOWER PART OF THE HEEL, ROUND IT OVER.
AND THERE WE ARE.
SO THAT MAKES OUR BEADS.
SO WE WORK THOSE IN, TOO.
SO WE'VE GOT THOSE BALLS AND BEADS.
LET'S LOOK AT THE REST OF THE WAY THE BOTTOM OF THE PLANT FRAME IS MADE HERE.
AND THIS IS WHY IT'S SO INDUSTRIAL.
IT ACTUALLY WAS MADE-- IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS MADE TO SHIP FLAT HERE.
WE'VE GOT THIS BOTTOM, WHICH IS-- IT'S JUST A PIECE OF OGEE SAWN HERE.
I JUST TOOK A PIECE OF OAK AND COPIED THE PATTERN AS BEST I COULD, AND THEN SAWED OUT THE PATTERN WITH A BOW SAW.
NOW, THAT'S NORMAL, BUT LOOK HERE.
THE WHOLE THING--THE STRETCHER,p INSTEAD OF A PIECE OF A WOOD, IS A GIANT 1/2" ROD WITH STEEL NUTS AND BOLTS AND WASHERS HOLDING IT TOGETHER.
SO THE WHOLE THING COULD COME APART AND SIT FLAT.
SO YOU'VE GOT THAT AND THEN THESE UGLY, UGLY TURNINGS-- I MEAN, REALLY JUST LIKE BASEBALL BATS.
AND THEN THAT WORK WE WERE DOING THERE-- THE BEADS AND SUCH THERE.
NOW, THE FINAL THING WE NEED TO JUST TAKE A LOOK AT-- OF COURSE, I WANT TO LOOK AT THE SHELVES FOR A SECOND.
I'D LOVE TO WORK ON THESE SHELVES SOME MORE BECAUSE THEY'RE CEDAR, AND, BOY, DO THEY SMELL GOOD.
LET'S JUST LOOK REAL QUICK AT HOW YOU DO THIS PART RIGHT HERE BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT ADJUSTS THE RACK BACK AND FORTH THERE.
SO YOU HAVE TO HAVE THAT SLIDE AND THE BOLT THAT GOES ALL THE WAY THROUGH.
AND SO WE'VE GOT THAT THREADED WITH A WING NUT ON THERE.
IT'S VERY, VERY SIMPLE.
NOW, AGAIN, SAWING-- WE'LL GET THAT OUT OF THE WAY.
VERY SIMPLE BIT OF WORK.
YOU HAVE TO TRUST YOURSELF WITH A HACKSAW.
AND I HAVE STARTED A PIECE RIGHT HERE.
SO HERE I'VE GOT SOME OF THE COLD-ROLLED, WHICH IS VERY, VERY STIFF.
I'M GONNA TAKE THE BLADE OUT OF THE HACKSAW.
SO THE HACKSAW, JUST LIKE A COPING SAW, WILL ALLOW YOU TO UNDO THE BLADE.
SEE IF I CAN DO THAT.
SLIP THAT THROUGH.
NOW, I'M GONNA KEEP TENSION ON THIS BECAUSE IF I DON'T, THE LITTLE HOLDERS THERE HAVE LOST THEIR SPRINGS.
ALL RIGHT.
SO NOW I CAN SET THIS JUST LIKE A COPING SAW IN ANY KIND OF OPENING.
I HOOK THAT HACKSAW BLADE BACK IN THERE.
AND LET'S SEE.
DID THEY-- DID THEY STAY IN THEIR NOTCHES?
YES, THEY DID.
OH, BLESS THEM.
ALL RIGHT.
BECAUSE, BOY, THAT'S A TIME WASTER THERE WHEN YOU GET THOSE LITTLE-- YOUR HACKSAW FALLS APART.
SO YOU GOT THE HACKSAW FRAME.
AND NOW WE CAN JUST SAW DOWN.
SO I JUST MADE A COUPLE OF HOLES UP HERE AND FILED THEM OPEN AND JUST SET THE BLADE INSIDE.
AND THAT'S ALL THERE IS TO IT.
JUST SAW DOWN.
JUST SAW DOWN, BUT LAY IT OUT CAREFULLY JUST LIKE WOOD INSTEAD OF DOING IT BY EYE SO IT WILL BE A NEAT EFFECT.
SO THERE WE GO.
WORKING, SAWING DOWN THIS SLOT, AND THEN FINISH UP WITH A FILE.
ALL RIGHT.
THERE YOU GO.
