"There'd been a long time for the United States government to consider the various dilemmas of Osama bin Laden's prospective martyrdom," says author Steve Coll on bin Laden's final resting place. "If you capture him but don't kill him, what do you do? If you do kill him because he resists, ... then how do you avoid a physical shrine and some way for followers or successors to honor his memory?"
