The story of Collin Moffett's son Eben, who enlists in 1777. Eben's regiment joins General Washington's forces at the battle of Brandywine where he loses a friend and is separated from his unit. Eben returns to New Hampshire for the harvest and is struck by the contrast between the battlefield and home. After the harvest Eben returns to his regiment, which is camped at Valley Forge.
